I sit here in my pyjamas and dressing gown, dosed up to the eyeballs on Benylin and Lemsip, listening to Enigma – McMxc A.D. (don’t ask me why, I just fancied it. Probable explanation – Man Flu!), trying to bring that little bit more realisation into the world that Man Flu is real, it’s no joke and really needs to be taken more seriously.
It all began on Tuesday morning when getting up for work, my goodness did I feel awful. I thought to myself “It’s all in the mind, don’t let it get you”. So I soldiered on to work and sat at my desk, Dad sat just across from me (family business) and said “you don’t look too peachy this morning” – I didn’t feel it either.
I’m not going to gross you out and go through the details of my Tuesday morning, but let’s just say it wasn’t the most pleasurable of experiences, even for a Tuesday morning! So the parents clubbed together (yes Mum works there too) and suggested it may be beneficial for me to take the afternoon off work and go home to sleep it off. So did I, so I did.
That was Tuesday and now we are at Friday and my week has consisted of going in to work (wheels need to carry on turning) for 8am(ish) and finishing about midday to go home and climb into bed, window open and die numerous times.
This week really has not been fun at all, besides the grumpy girl sat at the Sainsbury’s Pharmacy counter (who really needs to cheer up by the way), I have had to endure the feeling of coming close to my end more than once, and to give you some sort of idea of how bad it really is I’d like to quote a section from a very factual** website I found when researching the subject. Here’s the shocking truth about Man Flu:
“Man Flu is a crippling and debilitating disorder indiscriminately striking down male members of the human species without warning. The illness is often referred to pejoratively by female members of the species who are in fact immune from the illness as man flu is now known to exclusively attack the XY chromosome carrier. If Man Flu is kind enough not to kill the infected party it will definitely leave him weak, sick, hurting everywhere and in dire need of TLC.
Medical professionals now also widely recognise that self diagnosis by the sufferer is the best means of identification as the symptoms of Man Flu are far more severe than the simple common cold which predominantly targets the XX chromosome holders (i.e. females). This goes some way to explain the cynicism some women display towards their male counterparts.”
So now I’m sure you can appreciate that I have not been well at all.
Aside from the above, I have also enjoyed my week in some respects as it has allowed me to do some things which I have been meaning to do for a while:
- I have been able to catch up with some of my favourite TV shows. I completed The Walking Dead, and also Dexter (at some point I wished it was me on that table – YES it was that bad!) and I have also started the first season of Fringe which I am slowly getting addicted to!
- I have also been able to grow my twitter followers list (yes I know some of you may think this a little “sad” but I quite enjoy it) by about 20%. It’s not much but I now get to tweet to even more nice and interesting people.
So to sum up, Man Flu is not a very nice thing to have, guys you know what I’m talking about and you would probably agree that no one should be put through it. But we all have to realise that not enough is being done to prevent it or rid the world of this disease. So this is where I say that we need to continue to spread the word about the seriousness of Man Flu and continue to fight for recognition as it is REAL!
It’s not a cold, It’s FLU.
Have you suffered from Man Flu recently? Care to share your experience? Or maybe you have had to look after someone who’s had it?
I enjoyed writing this post and hope that you enjoyed reading it. I also hope that it is only taken light heartedly as I realise I may have opened myself up to some abuse here! At the end of the day it’s only meant as a bit of fun!! I, however, apologise if this offends anyone.
I’d love to read your comments so please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for reading.
*That’s not technically true! :-)
